“In these pages there is a lot of humor—almost always of the kind that arises when you aren’t looking for it, when writing happily becomes a way of prolonging solitary conversations. It is a book about someone who comes up with poems in the collective and stories when riding a taxi; someone who, perhaps toward the end of a walk, will put together those murmuring and half-miraculous texts.

The topics are deliciously miscellaneous: paternity, too many books, vocational conflicts, love and friendship affairs, and above all the desire to learn, maybe, a little bit more about the world. I don’t think that it’s possible to talk about this book without using, even in the past, the word ‘wisdom.’

I wouldn’t say that Mairal lives to narrate: at some point, after living intensely and silently, after absorbing, after stalling the present without pausing or hurrying, Mairal decides to narrate. And he does so with so much precision, so perfectly immersed in the experience, that it is difficult not to believe him—believe everything from him, I mean.”
