Juan Villoro

Writer and journalist Juan Villoro was born in Mexico City in 1956. He has been a professor at UNAM and a visiting professor at universities like Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, ​​as well as at the New Journalism Foundation created by Gabriel García Márquez. He is a columnist for Reforma (Mexico) and was the director of La Jornada Semanal.

Since 2014, he has been a member of El Colegio Nacional. In 2012 he received the José Donoso Ibero-American Prize and later the 2018 Manuel Rojas Prize, both awarded in Chile for his entire body of work. Among the awards he has received in Mexico are the Mazatlán Prize for his book of literary essays Efectos personales and the Xavier Villaurrutia for his short story collection La casa pierde.

In Spain he received the Herralde Prize for his novel El testigo; In Argentina, he won the ACE Prize for his play Filosofía de vida; and in Cuba, the José María Arguedas Prize for his novel Arrecife. His journalism has been recognized with the Rey de España, Ciudad de Barcelona, ​​Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, and Diario Madrid awards. In 2022, he received the Gabo Prize in Bogotá for his journalistic career.

His books on soccer, Dios es redondo and Balón separado, have been praised by the public and sports critics. His children’s books have had a wide resonance among the new generations (among them, the four volumes of the Professor Zíper saga and El libro salvaje, which has sold one and a half million copies in Mexico).

He has translated books by Goethe, Lichtenberg, Hofmannsthal, Schnitlzer, and Rezzori from German, and books by Truman Capote and Graham Green from English. His own work has been translated into over ten languages.

His most recent books are La figura del mundo. El orden secreto de las cosas, a memoir about his father (the philosopher Luis Villoro), and No soy un robot, a reflection on reading in the digital age.
