Hotel Montana y otros cuentos
Rafael Gumucio

SHORT STORIES | 2021 | 150 pages

Twenty-five years ago, Rafael Gumucio made his literary debut with a short story collection. Today, with a dozen novels and essays under his belt, he returns for the first time to the genre where, he claims, "In Latin American literature, as in Russian and North American literature, the brave are put to the test." And he does this by concentrating the best of his writing into ten stories: the confidence, the rhythmic prose, paradoxes and unprecedented comparisons, the fond perspective on family relationships, the mother as a figure who is as complex as she is essential to the characters, the cheerful compassion towards clumsiness (both personal and not), the happy mixture of history and imagination.

Set in Port-au-Prince, Paris, New York, and Santiago, as well as in some mental landscapes, these stories portray parents who are incapable of letting their children grow, children incapable of letting their parents go, Chileans trying to learn English in New York or trapped by municipal bureaucracy, others dueling under the effects of marihuana or sharing their birthday celebration with Evo Morales.
